Dressing for Yourself: Why Personal Style Matters More Than Approval

Dressing for Yourself: Why Personal Style Matters More Than Approval

There comes a point when dressing for everyone else's approval gets exhausting.

Too young.

Too old.

Too loud.

Too dark.

Too fitted.

Too revealing.

Too strange.

Too much.

There will always be somebody with an opinion.

The question is how much authority you want to give them.

Approval Is a Moving Target

Trying to dress in a way that pleases everyone is impossible because everyone wants something different.

One person thinks you should dress more conservatively.

Another thinks your clothes are boring.

Someone says your boots are ridiculous.

Someone else wants to know where you bought them.

You cannot win a game where the rules change depending on who is watching.

So eventually, you stop playing.

Personal Style Takes Time

Most people do not wake up one morning with a fully developed sense of style.

You experiment.

You copy things you like.

You buy something that seemed brilliant in the store and wonder what possessed you when you get home.

You go through phases.

You change your mind.

You rediscover things you loved years ago.

That is normal.

Personal style is not a finished project.

It evolves.

Wear What You Actually Like

This sounds obvious.

It is not.

A surprising amount of shopping is influenced by what people think they are supposed to wear.

What is trendy.

What is flattering.

What is age appropriate.

What their friends wear.

What their partner likes.

What social media tells them everyone else is buying.

It is worth asking a very simple question once in a while:

Do I actually like this?

If the answer is no, put it back.

Clothes Can Change How You Carry Yourself

There is a reason certain outfits make you stand differently.

Clothing communicates.

Sometimes to other people.

Sometimes to yourself.

The right outfit can make you feel sharper, stronger, softer, stranger, more playful, more dramatic, or more confident.

That does not mean clothes create confidence out of thin air.

But they can reinforce something that was already there.

You Do Not Need Permission

You do not need to earn the right to wear something dramatic.

You do not need a certain body.

You do not need a certain age.

You do not need an event.

You do not need everyone around you to understand your taste.

If you love the coat, wear the coat.

If you want the boots, wear the boots.

If the dress feels like too much for the grocery store, perhaps the grocery store could stand to be a little more interesting.

Style Should Feel Personal

The best style does not always make sense to everyone else.

That is kind of the point.

It should reflect your taste, your mood, your history, your influences, and your personality.

Not a checklist.

Not an algorithm.

Not somebody else's idea of what you should look like.

Trends will change.

Opinions will change.

You probably will too.

But dressing for yourself is a habit worth keeping.

Because approval is temporary.

Personal style is yours.
